At his first Oscar appearance accompanied by girlfriend and High School Musical co-star Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron wore a tuxedo by Dolce & Gabbana accessorized with a vintage Rolex watch. The vintage Rolex watch is the perfect symbol of Zac Efron’s attempt to transition beyond the cage of teen idol stardom. When his new film, 17 Again, premiered in London, Zac Efron wore the vintage Rolex watch again when was met by a mass of screaming teenage. Trying to be heard above the screams, Zac Efron said: “It’s insane. This is the biggest one yet. It’s crazy.” In the new comedy about a man who travels back in time to relive his youth, the 21-year old teen idol plays the younger version of Matthew Perry’s character - a frustrated and unfulfilled 37-year-old father of two. The role marks a break away from the high school scenes he has become synonymous with in the past. Zac Efron is looking forward to the reaction of his fan base: “I can’t wait to see what everybody thinks… this is a movie to bring along the fans… I want to bring them along to a new adventure.” A sign of this desire to change came out when he was asked if he would be prepared to do a full frontal nude scene. Zac Efron did not rule it out when told reporters: “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t know.” In other words, like Daniel Radcliffe (otherwise known as Harry Potter) who shocked his fans when he appeared naked in West End production of Equus, Zac Efron is ready to do whatever it takes to make the transition, and wearing a vintage Rolex is a symbol of that dedication.

Of course, there is a time in every teen idol’s life when he must leave the screaming teenagers behind and make an actual go as an adult actor. Zac Efron officially has arrived at that moment as the Academy Awards entrance with the vintage Rolex watch revealed. With his traditional Boy Scout good looks and the Disney-designed romance with Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron has never been taken seriously. When Rolling Stone declared him the “New American Heartthrob” in 2007, Zac Efron commented in the innocuous cover story: “As long as I stay boring, I think I’ll be fine.” Today, however, Zac Efron is changing, and the image he presented at the Oscars with his vintage Rolex reflects this change. In Interview Magazine, the teen idol tried to loosen the shackles of his pretty boy image with the aid of the ultimate magazine of hip style: The bohemian cover announced like a pop cultural oracle: “Zac Efron Is the Future.” In the interview, which was conducted by independent director Gus Van Sant, a man whose stamp of approval is so coveted by young Hollywood that it became a plotline in HBO’s Entourage, Zac Efron discusses his upcoming period film with Richard Linklater, Me and Orson Welles, and his desire to escape the cage of teen idoldom. Isn’t there something strangely exciting about a teen idol attempting to break free of the chains of a heartthrob? For Zac Efron, however, it remains quite the gamble for a star whose fame depends on the adulation of the teenage girls who adore him because he is their sweet, harmless, and cuddly puppy. Without question, the overwhelming success of the High School Musical trilogy confirms that kids still crave the Harlequin romance version of sexuality. Trying to transition into a more grown-up role is the sword on which so many beloved teen idols have fallen. Can Zac Efron pull a Johnny Depp and become a respected A-list actor, or will he wind up as the next David Cassidy, impaled on the teen idol blade of his Partridge Family success? Whatever the outcome, by wearing a vintage Rolex and refining his image at the Academy Awards and his London film premiere, Zac Efron has taken a step in the right direction.
