Kelly Slater And Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea; Surfing The Tide

Kelly Slater

A famous quote says that for surfing you’ll need “only your body, a surfboard and a wave”. If surfing really were that effortless famous American Surfer Kelly Slater makes it look a world easier the way his body befriends the waves every time they come to lash at him. A Rolex watch in a very similar manner makes water out of troubles and has withstood the challenges of time and tide by reinventing itself constantly. With the Sea Dweller Deepsea, Rolex has stepped into territories that were hitherto forbidden. Surfing is neither a game nor is it a contest, it is an art, a sport that has to be mastered meeting near death situations at all times. And this is where the Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea comes in as the perfect companion no matter how deep in the waters you are. Rolex has constantly challenged presumptions and made a watch man’s eternal attendant wherever he may be. Kelly Slater has earned a name for himself today because he has learnt to respect the varying moods of the sea and developed a bond with it that very few can muster courage to.

Slater started his winning spree with a victory at the Body Glove Surfbout Trestles in California. 1994 was the champion surfer’s best year. Slater won the Rip Curl Pro in Australia, Gotcha Lacanau Pro in France, Chiemsee Pipe Masters in Hawaii and the Bud Surf Tours in USA.

Rolex Sea Dweller Deep Sea

Winning the US Open in 1996 was a special moment for the young surfer. Slater was also that year’s champion at Chiemsea Pipe Masters in Hawaii and Rip Curl Pro Hossegor in France to name a few of the many honors that he gathered that year. In 1997 Kelly won the Billabong Pro in Australia, Typhoon Lagoon Surf Challenge in Specialty USA. Since then Slater has never had to look back winning most of the toughest of surfing challenges round the world including this year’s Hang Loose Pro in Brazil.

The surfer who is renowned for his bravado and surfing style appeared on many episodes of the Baywatch series and has also starred in many surfing films. Slater is also a part of the band The Surfers. Kelly also has the video game Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer in his name. Slater released his autobiography Pipe Dreams in 2003 and a second book For the Love in 2008. Slater through Reef Check is also proactive in conserving oceans around the world and preserving temperate reefs in California.

Originally a diver’s watch the Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea is also a favorite amongst surfers because of the accuracy the watch promises even in the heaviest of waves. The Sea Dweller Deepsea is allocated with a one-of –its kind Ringlock System. The novel concept of a case structure came about to build resistance against the powerful pressure that is exerted by water at an extreme depth of 12,800 feet. The helium escape valve of the Rolex watch helps to withstand strong decompression, and the certified chronometer can endure any challenge under water. The Sea Dweller Deepsea also has a unidirectional rotatable bezel that checks decompression times and the bracelet is a special Oyster Fliplock with a Glidelock clasp. The watch is self wound and has a 43mm long radial. The Sea Dweller Deepsea comes with a glistening steel finish and is crystallized in sapphire. For Kelly Slater surfing is a way of life and for the Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea which understands that surfing is a sport of wits and tremendous courage there couldn’t be a better likeness to the Rolex ideology than Slater.

A Call For Celebration: Rolex Completes 101 Years Of Excellence.

RolexOnce upon a time, on this very 2nd day of July a man who had set out with a dream to make a wristwatch which would be more than an instrument of utility and to transform it into an elegant piece of precision got his dream registered. The dream was none other than the watch brand Rolex and the man was its famous creator Hans Wilsdorf. On July 2nd, 1908 Hans registered the mark Rolex under the number 24001 and a hundred and one years after, today, Rolex is a brand name that instantly connects with brilliance and panache. In 1915 Wilsdorf had culled enough enthusiasm from the wearers of his watch to register Rolex as the company name.

A lot of planning and strategizing had gone into making the watch’s exactness in marking time, reach the level of perfection that it can proudly claim for itself today. Rolex by the first half of the 20th century had become such an embodiment of acme that in 1940 of the 21,561 certificates of precision that were issued by the four offices to deliver a rate control certificate for wrist chronometers, Rolex bagged for itself 19,155 of them.

Rolex has many firsts to its credit. It was the first watch company to have invented the waterproof watches. Rolex understood the need to keep oneself abreast of time like no other and came up with the idea of showing the date on the dial. Rolex was also the first watch company that showed two time zones on the same watch. That a watch could be a perfect chronometer was not known before Rolex bagged the record for the most certified chronometer movements in the wristwatch category. The Rolex brand also associated itself with developing the original quartz watch movements.

Hans WilsdorfOf the many Rolex inventions the “Perpetual” was Rolex’s invention of the first self-winding watch which used a rotor and was mathematically designed to mark time accurately. The watch was incorporated with listings for the day and date of the week and Rolex very aptly renamed it as the Day Date. To make their watches water resistant Rolex came up with a unique technology, one that allowed the wearer to sport his Rolex at the beach or at the pool. The watch resistant case got its name from the sea and was called the Oyster. Rolex has a series of watches that are called the Oyster Perpetual editions.

Wilsdorf was quick to understand that just creating a trademark wasn’t enough. It was important that the watch also got a universal clientele and people around the world could avail of the Rolex experience. As a marketing strategy Rolex prioritized the creation of a very personalized design as a result of which the watches were contemporary of the times in which they were created.

The Rolex credo of Quality, Perfection and Consistency survived generations making Rolex an heirloom that is passed from father to son. The Rolex watch is extremely reliable and its durability makes it a name to reckon with. The Rolex SA has three watch lines, the Oyster Perpetual, the Professional and the Cellini. Each line has its share of loyalists and the tacit norm is that once you own a Rolex it’s not only difficult but impossible to change your brand.

Rolex takes itself beyond watches and allies with games. Rolex is the Official time sponsor of the Wimbledon and the US Open and also extends its support to golf and water sports. In 2007, Rolex got its headquarters in New York and since then its fame in the American market has soared.
