The association that began almost an epoch ago, standing the test of time, adapting yet resolute, started out when Rolex presented the legendary Arnold Palmer with a gold Oyster Perpetual
Beginning in 1978 Rolex pioneered the sponsorship of golfing events by aiding the British Open Championship right after which it forged a partnership with the United States Golf Association (USGA). Abiding with its principal of supporting exceptionally talented individuals Rolex sought out to promote women’s golf and soon formed a partnership with the LGPA. Additionally Rolex brought out the Rolex Player of the Year, the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year and the Rolex First-Time Winners in order to honor and promote the ability of talented women golfers. The most recent development in this partnership is the launching of the Rolex Women’s Rankings that combines women golfers everywhere into one single entity. Apart from all of this Rolex is also the official timekeeper for the prestigious women’s golf tournament, the Solheim Cup.
Supporting the Ryder Cup men’s golfing challenge for many years now Rolex also became the official timepiece at the PGA of America, and the official timekeeper
Recognizing individual capacity and will irrespective of class, color or even gender is a principal that has forever been upheld by the world class watch manufacturing company
The Solheim Cup was the result of the passion of the Norwegian- American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim. He was instrumental in creating this professional golfing tournament for women. This biennial tournament had its first competition in 1990 and was held in an even year’s format. Due to the postponement of the Ryder Cup in 2002 on the pretext of the 9/11 incident, the Solheim Cup shifted the playoffs to an odd number format from 2003 onwards so that it didn’t clash with the Ryder Cup tournament. The Solheim Cup tournament is a competition for women teams representing Europe and United States. The American team is selected on the basis of a point system and players on the LPGA are awarded with points for a good performance on the tour. In the European team only seven players were selected on the basis of point system earned through the Ladies European Tour up to 2005. This was done primarily to ensure that the top European players who were competing in the LPGA were a part of the European team. Another change in the 2007 ensured that only the top five players from the Ladies European Tournament were selected for the European team while the rest were chosen on the basis of official world golf rankings.
The increasing popularity of the LPGA resulted in these changes that were incorporated permanently into the selection process. Apart from this system a ‘Captain’s pick’ feature allows the captain to select their team regardless of the point system. Usually the team captains are professional golfers who have recently retired and have experience of playing the Solheim Cup tournament as a part of the various teams. Played over a period of three days the Solheim Cup tournament follows the same format as that of the Ryder Cup. The Junior Solheim Cup is a spin-off of the original format for amateur women golfers who play against their European equivalents. Growing over the years to become a significant proving ground for professional golfers the Solheim Cup does not merely seek to showcase talented golfers but also tries to inspire people from around the world to pursue their various crafts and reach the highest form of personal accomplishment.
