Driving Home a Point: The Solheim Cup

Solheim Cup Tournament Recognizing individual capacity and will irrespective of class, color or even gender is a principal that has forever been upheld by the world class watch manufacturing company Rolex. In its continual tradition of honoring and supporting brilliant individuals that are out to transform the world and knock every long held perception out, Rolex endorses numerous events that become a springboard for launching exceptionally talented individuals. The Solheim Cup tournament is yet another of Rolex’s endeavors to endorse and assist champions. This tournament is a platform for professional woman golfers from around the world to compete against each other and through this polish their remarkable ability.
Teams Lined UpThe Solheim Cup was the result of the passion of the Norwegian- American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim. He was instrumental in creating this professional golfing tournament for women. This biennial tournament had its first competition in 1990 and was held in an even year’s format. Due to the postponement of the Ryder Cup in 2002 on the pretext of the 9/11 incident, the Solheim Cup shifted the playoffs to an odd number format from 2003 onwards so that it didn’t clash with the Ryder Cup tournament. The Solheim Cup tournament is a competition for women teams representing Europe and United States. The American team is selected on the basis of a point system and players on the LPGA are awarded with points for a good performance on the tour. In the European team only seven players were selected on the basis of point system earned through the Ladies European Tour up to 2005. This was done primarily to ensure that the top European players who were competing in the LPGA were a part of the European team. Another change in the 2007 ensured that only the top five players from the Ladies European Tournament were selected for the European team while the rest were chosen on the basis of official world golf rankings.

Solheim Cup The increasing popularity of the LPGA resulted in these changes that were incorporated permanently into the selection process. Apart from this system a ‘Captain’s pick’ feature allows the captain to select their team regardless of the point system. Usually the team captains are professional golfers who have recently retired and have experience of playing the Solheim Cup tournament as a part of the various teams. Played over a period of three days the Solheim Cup tournament follows the same format as that of the Ryder Cup. The Junior Solheim Cup is a spin-off of the original format for amateur women golfers who play against their European equivalents. Growing over the years to become a significant proving ground for professional golfers the Solheim Cup does not merely seek to showcase talented golfers but also tries to inspire people from around the world to pursue their various crafts and reach the highest form of personal accomplishment.

The Solheim Cup tournament is all set to be held from the 17 to the 23 of August this year. Betsy King the United States team captain has selected the players for the 2009 challenge that includes players like Nicole Castrale, Laura Diaz and Paula Creamer. While the European team has players like Becky Brewerton, Laura Davies and Sophie Gustafson. The Solheim Cup will tee off at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois and is bound to be an exhilarating competition as the top golfers from Europe and America face off employing every imaginable skill and instinct.

As a part of its rich legacy of promoting activities that aid remarkable individuals in attaining their objective of personal triumph Rolex proudly supports the Solheim Cup tournament.
