Right from its inception the world class Swiss watch manufacturer,
The Rolex Submariner was introduced to the American public through a newspaper advertisement in 1955 that featured the qualities of this amazing watch. More than relying on any clever ploy to market the watch Rolex utilized its actual performance, statistical data and the opinion of experts. It quotes the actual opinion of the vice president of the Institute of Submarine Research in Cannes and Captain T.A.Hampton from the British Underwater Research who used the Rolex Submariner in their routine dives and experiments underwater. The advertisement further talks about the features of the watch like the fact that it is waterproof up to 660 feet and all its dials along with its three hands are extra luminous that allow the diver to keep a track of time even in extremely low light conditions. It further states that the watch features a revolutionary new time recorder incorporated in the rim which allows the diver to turn the dial to the precise minute of the dive and using this dial the diver is able to calibrate the total time spent underwater. This rotating rim is an essential for recording the decompression stages, which in turn provide the diver with accurate information about the resurfacing time. The advertisement goes on to talk about the path breaking qualities of the watch that makes it ideal for everyday wear as well e.g. the perpetual self winding rotor mechanism and the high level of protection provided by the special oyster case.

When Sharon Stone wore a men’s stainless steel
Since Sphere was an ultra-expensive studio event film that takes place in an underwater base, a Rolex submariner was a perfect choice for Sharon Stone’s character, Dr. Elizabeth “Beth” Halpern, a marine biologist and biochemist. Wikipedia describes the opening and the setting of Sphere as follows: “In the middle of the southern Pacific Ocean, a thousand feet below the surface, what is believed to be an alien spacecraft is discovered after a ship laying transocean cable has its cable cut and the United States Navy investigates the cause. The thickness of coral growth on the spaceship suggests that it has been there for almost 300 years. A team made up of a marine biologist, a mathematician, an astrophysicist, a psychologist and a member of the U.S. Navy is tasked with investigating the spaceship. The team (along with two navy technicians) are housed in a state-of-the-art underwater living environment called the Habitat during their stay on the ocean floor.” Given such a context, it further makes sense that the character would wear a men’s stainless steel Rolex Submariner with a black dial. Just reading the last sentence, such a Rolex watch sounds like it should be on the wrist of an action-adventure hero. The choice to have the character of Dr. Elizabeth “Beth” Halpern wear such a Rolex definitely was not made by Sharon Stone, but probably by Michael Crichton in the original novel, that was the source material for the screenplay. If Michael Crichton or the screenwriter did not specify the watch design, then director Barry Levinson and made the choice with the costume designer.
Question: Why go into such detail about the choice of a Rolex watch for a character in a movie that was released over a decade ago? Good question: The answer is that a decade later, Sharon Stone still is wearing a stainless steel Rolex Submariner with a black dial. Clearly, during the making of what can be called a somewhat forgettable Hollywood blockbuster, she fell in love with her character’s wardrobe, specifically the Rolex watch. Whether she actually was given the wardrobe watch by the studio, which seems doubtful or whether she later bought a Rolex Submariner for herself, Sharon Stone became a Rolex enthusiast and a Submariner devotee during the shooting of the movie. Seven years after Sphere was released, on the French cover of Elle in 2005, Sharon Stone is wearing a men’s stainless steel Rolex Submariner with a black dial. Clearly, once you have the opportunity to wear a classic Rolex watch on your wrist like the stainless steel Rolex Submariner with a black dial, you will be won over for good and there is no going back to second-rate watches. Once converted to Rolex when her character wore a Rolex Submariner in Sphere, Sharon Stone became a true Rolex devotee.
