SpeedSource To Opt for New Pit Strategy In The Second Round Of The GRAND-AM Rolex Car Series

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

The second round of this year’s GRAND-AM Rolex Car Series, kick-starts with the EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.  The 2 hour, 45 minutes race will showcase new race strategies, as teams joust with each other to get an advantage.

The SpeedSource Racing Team will unveil a new pit strategy at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. According to this strategy, each of its three cars would have its own team and a dedicated manager looking after the well being of the machines. Accordingly the No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 will be supervised by David Haskell, Gerry Green will call the shots for the No.69 FXDD, and Marcus Shen will manage the No.68 MazdaSpeed. Each car will have a separate pit location for practice, qualification and racing unlike other teams which prefer to have one centralized pit location for their racing machines.

Explaining the strategy, team owner Sylvain Tremblay said that separate pit locations will give their cars an advantage because each car will have a dedicated team waiting on them, improving their performance. He acknowledged that it would require more equipment, increasing the cost of the operation.

The Rolex Sports Car Series is the premier-most racing tournament conducted by the Grand American Road Racing Association. The series started out in 2000 replacing the United States Road Racing Championship. The main attractions of the series are the Sports Racing Prototypes and Grand Touring cars.

The Rolex Sports Car Series has seen many changes over the years, including the replacement of the Sports Racing Prototypes with the Daytona Prototypes in the year 2003. The Daytona Prototypes were designed in a controlled technological environment restricting any advantage over the rest of the field with the intention of providing more close finishes.

No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8

The Rolex Sports Car Series was seen as an alternative to the American Le Mans Series. In order to compete with the Le Mans Series the league acquired Six Hours of Watkins Glen, giving the league its second endurance class racing tournament along with the 24 hours of Daytona. This was somewhat similar to the American Le Mans Series which had 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans as endurance events. The somewhat slower Grand Touring (GT) class was further classified into three subdivisions which included GTO for larger production based cars, GTU for smaller cars and the AGT for American tube frame based cars.

The GT class has attracted a large number of Americans, Europeans and Japanese manufacturers over the years who have found the conditions appropriate for racing their vehicles. The competition has seen a number of popular brands running under its banner including big names like Chevrolet, Pontiac, BMW, Porsche and Mazda.

All Eyes On Magnus Racing After A Stirring Performance At The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Event At Watkins Glen

No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3Like all the other teams in its class, Magnus Racing is feeling the heat generated by three back to back GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car events held over the last three week period. The team has high hopes pinned on the No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3, driven by Craig Stanton.

The team has made preparations for the Mid-Ohio Car Race Course event that follows closely at the heels of the Lime Rock Event and the Watkins Glen event. The No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3 had set the tracks ablaze at Watkins Glen, where it had set a new record with Craig Stanton behind the wheel. During the course of the event, it won a pole position in the qualifications, followed by a sterling performance at the race, where it led for three and a half hours. The team will also participate in the EMCO Gears Classic for the Continental Tie Sports Car Challenge, where it will showcase the Magnus Racing Porsche Cayman.

The team owner was upbeat after witnessing the form shown by his rookie drivers at Watkins Glen. He said that Watkins Glen was a good experience for them and the good show proved that the team had loads of talent to back the No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3. Discussing their strategy at the upcoming event at the Mid-Ohio Car Race Course event, he said that they would attack from the beginning, driving aggressively, knowing well that the tracks may not suit the speedy No.44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3.

Magnus racing has been keeping busy since the Watkins Glen event. Leh Keen and newly inducted Bleekemolen competed in the famous 24 Hours of the Le Mans, Leh Keen finishing with a podium finish and Bleekemolen finishing with a respectable 8th place.

Craig Stanton

Potter and Stanton are currently tenth in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT Class, with the team tied up at the fifth place in the GT-Class Team Championship.

The Rolex Sports Car Series is one of the premier-most racing tournaments conducted by the Grand American Road Racing Association, replacing the defunct United States Road Racing Championship. The series, featuring Sports Racing Prototypes and Grand Touring cars, is built around the Rolex 24 at Daytona event.

The Rolex Sports Car Series has seen many modifications over the years, including the induction of Daytona Prototypes in the year 2003, replacing the Sports Racing Prototypes. The cost effective Daytona Prototypes were specifically built for the Rolex Sports Car Series in a controlled environment that did not allow for many innovations in the chassis or engine design.

SpeedSource Wins GT Class At The Rolex 24 At Daytona

Rolex 24 At Daytona

SpeedSource lived up to its motto of ‘Never Give Up’ when it bagged the GT Class at the Rolex 24 At Daytona 2010. The team included Nick Ham, Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell and Jonathan Bomarito, together they raced in the No.70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8. Racers teamed up to give the team its second Rolex 24 victory in three years. It also turned out to be the 23rd class victory for Mazda in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Sylvain Trembley owed the success of the team to the dealers of North America and Mexico as well as to all the members of the Mazda Speed Motorsports and club racers. SpeedSource began with a third but eventually lost its pace during the third and the fourth hours. This loss continued when the car began to vibrate. As the race hit fourteenth hour, the team had registered a sixth place but still was seven laps away from the leading car. In spite of all the hurdles, Mazda RX-8 had got onto lead the race, reiterating its motto- ‘Never Give Up’. Due to a trail of misfortunes of competitors together with SpeedSource’s own efforts, the team led by four laps over No. 67 ShoreTel/Openwave Porsche GT3.

The SpeedSource’s team members maintained their pace till the end, making the title of GT Class in Rolex 24 At Daytona fall into their kitty. Except for TRG or Stevenson Motorsports, no other team could lead the race for about 16 long consecutive hours. Moreover, these teams remained in the top five positions most of the time during the race. But the race witnessed a twist in the final quarter when Andrew Davis, Stevenson Motorsports driver faced a transmission problem in the car while all the three drivers paced up to complete 217 laps. During the same time, Bobby Labonte, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion racing in the No. 71 TRG ran out of fuel while he was on the superstretch making it the last lead of the day for the No. 71.

No.70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8

broken spring and a stuck throttle took a toll on No.67 Porche GT3, forcing them out. SpeedSource’s No.69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 also suffered a water leak in the car which made them settle for the 16th position in their Class. After all the lead racers had their way out, that left SpeedSource’s No.70 leading by four laps. However, on the bigger picture, all the four champs Nick Ham, Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell and Jonathan Bomarito made it to the seventh position completing 145 laps overall. The checkered flag was crossed over by Jonathan Bomarito who expressed the whole experience as ‘Amazing’ and gave the credit of team’s success to all the team members. He felt elated and said that it was the confidence that every team member had in each other that played the trick. The No. 70’s success was followed up by Bergmeister’s team who finished at second position while the third position was taken up by TRG’s team racing in No. 66 AXA Porsche GT3. With a great start to the season the SpeedSource team is very positive about the upcoming season and is looking forward to the Grand Prix of Miami, the next race of the Grand-Am Rolex Series which has been scheduled to take place at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

All-American Lineup For The Rolex 24 At Daytona By GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing

Alex Gurney And Jon Fogarty

The one team that can truly boast of an all-American connection at the Rolex 24 At Daytona would be GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. The team not only has an all-American driver lineup but also boasts of an all-American crew. Even the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Chevy Riley, that the team has been racing in for the past five consecutive years, is a U.S. made Riley XX powered by an engine straight out of Detroit, which is a Chevrolet version of GM’s celebrated small-block V8. Equipped with a starry lineup and an all-American crew, drivers, car and engine, all that is left to see is that whether GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing can create history by being the first 100% American team to claim victory in the event that can be traced back to 1962.

The enviable all-star lineup at GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing includes Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty, Jimmie Johnson and Jimmy Vasser. All the drivers have an excellent track record behind them and bring with them versatility as well as experience to the team. While the duo of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty has proved their mettle by twice becoming the reigning champions at the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, Jimmie Johnson will be bringing to the team his experience of winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship for a record four times. Even Jimmy Vasser will be joining the team for a third year in a row and will be bringing his expertise of being a former CART Champ Car World Series titlist. GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing can also very well claim to be the only returning all-American as well as all-champion lineup that has entered to compete in the top-tier Daytona Prototype division.

No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Chevy Riley

The all-star lineup that presently represents the GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team on the Daytona International Speedway tracks made its debut in the year 2008 and claimed a second-place finish at the event. This year the team has plans to make the time off the tracks as entertaining as it is on the tracks. GAINSCO Auto Insurance announced its plans to entertain about 85 agent partners, VIPs and award-winning employees at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. One of the highlights of the event would be a Friday night dinner hosted by the team wherein Bob Stallings, the team owner, and the four drivers would meet and greet the guests. The second highlight of the evening would be when the GAINSCO drivers would demonstrate their skills and talent on the fast-gaining-popularity iRacing.com simulator that features the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Daytona Prototype. The team was introduced to the online racing simulation offered by iRacing through Alex Gurney. The online racing simulation is an exact replica of the No. 99 GAINSCO car as well as the Daytona tracks. For NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson the Daytona tracks offer the real deal as he stated that the challenge of the Rolex 24 At Daytona is what keeps getting him back. He also added that it was a challenge for him to come out of his comfort zone and learn the car, the braking zones and turning points amongst others.

Darren Law And Brumos Racing Ready To Defend The Rolex 24 At Daytona Title

Darren Law

Darren Law is all set to get back at Daytona International Speedway and replicate his biggest victory of 2009 Grand-am Rolex Sports Car Series season, the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Like every year, this time too Rolex is back with a bang to keep up with the promise of supporting excellence in the sports field. The precision with which all Rolex watch models are crafted is an epitome in itself and Rolex makes sure the same precision reflects on the sports field and culture as well. Like all sports events organized by Rolex, the Rolex 24 At Daytona is yet another platform which encourages sports persons to display their talents and to better themselves with every game.

Darren Law together with Brumos Racing co-drivers made history last year at the Rolex 24 At Daytona when they had the closest-ever finish in the most popular endurance race. They ended up topping a strong line-up of 49 cars by just 0.167 seconds by the end of 24 hours and completed 735 laps spread on 3.56 mile infield road course in Daytona Beach, Florida. Darren Law and his co-driver David Donohue will partner with 5 times winner of Rolex 24 At Daytona ace driver Hurley Haywood and 3 times Daytona 24 winner Butch Leitzinger together with Rolex 24 Class winner Raphael Matos for this time’s driving duty. Their troupe will be racing in Porche powered Daytona Prototype which has been christened as No. 59, which shot to fame in the 1970s by Haywood.

Darren Law

All the five legendary drivers were honored with timeless pieces from Rolex for their victories in the season-opening endurance classic which Darren Law says is no cake-walk to repeat. Darren Law who is geared up to compete in more than 20-sports car races this year including the American Le Mans Series GT2 class, spoke about the Rolex’s endeavors- Daytona, Le Mans and Sebring, and considered Le Mans very tough for it is an eight-mile track while he found Sebring very bumpy and technical therefore making it for a rough circuit to drive. The versatile Phoenix racer called Daytona a task because it is very long and has the longest night-time running, which he thought was pretty grueling for drivers as well as the crew since through the night the car needs to be driven carefully so that it stays in good condition. The sunrise is the signal when he said the real intense pressure starts to mount. Darren Law considered continuity and team chemistry to be the key factors for their victory. They will be competing together for the seventh time in the Rolex 24 At Daytona history. The whole team looked abuzz with confidence and Darren Law zealously was found looking forward to their win. The Rolex 24 At Daytona is the first of the 12 races in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. This year too Rolex will once again withstand its immortal virtue of perfection and will exemplify its quest of attaining brilliance on field through the Rolex 24 At Daytona. It is going to be one of the most awaited weekends of not only the Rolex series but the entire world of motorsports.

2010 Rolex 24 Heritage Exhibition To Feature Vic Elford As Grand Marshal

Vic Elford

Vic Elford has been appointed the Grand Marshal for the 48th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The winner of the 1968 Rolex 24 At Daytona will kick off the event that marks the beginning of the international motrosports calendar. Vic Elford has been one of Britain’s most versatile drivers in racing history. As the Grand Marshal, Vic Elford would have the pleasure to command the drivers, “Drivers, start your engines”. The acting Grand Marshal for the 2010 season would definitely go down memory lane as he commands the beginning of the event. Vic Elford won the overall title at the endurance race in 1968 in the Porsche 907, which also marked the first of Porsche’s 21 overall victories at the twice-round-the-clock event. Vic Elford was accompanied behind the wheel by the Germans Jochen Neerpasch and Rolf Stommelen as well as Switzerland’s Jo Siffert.

The legendary Porsche 907 will also be featured in the Rolex 24 Heritage Exhibition. The Porsche 907 that marked Porsche’s first major international overall victory will be on display for fans throughout the weekend at the Goodyear Legends of Racing display which would be part of the Sprint FANZONE. The current owner of the Porsche 907, Henry Payne, would drive the legendary vehicle on Saturday morning, i.e. on the 30th of January, in the Rolex 24 Heritage Exhibition. The 1968 Rolex 24 At Daytona race was as action packed as any event over the years. Vic Elford in his No. 54 Porsche was the first to claim the checkered flag as they avoided the disaster that struck four other cars. Quick Vic, as Vic Elford was fondly called, began the race with Jochen Neerpasch who fell ill early into the race.

Rolex 24 At Daytona

In the 1968 endurance race two factory Porsches were damaged early into the race as a violent accident spilled over the tracks. After the accident Rolf Stommelen was moved to co-drive with Vic Elford. Once Quick Vic got control of the tracks, he took the lead three hours ahead of the finish. Though Vic Elford was the man behind the win, as a favor to Porsche’s racing director, he let factory drivers Jo Siffert and Hans Herrmann race a few laps to share in the glory. The five drivers completed 673 laps, while covering 2,565 miles at an average speed of 106.697 mph. Vic Elford won by a total of five laps and hence swept the podium. Quick Vic has also showed his mettle in rally driving as he won the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally and the European Rally Championship. Vic Elford has also established himself in Formula One and NASCAR races. The announcement of Vic Elford being selected as Grand Marshal had come along a month ago. By playing Grand Marshal to the event, Vic Elford will be joining the league of racing legends such as Brian Redman, Dan Gurney, Jackie Stewart, Richard Petty, Derek Bell, Bobby Rahal and Sir Stirling Moss. Vic Elford’s duties will not just end by giving the opening command but will also be carried forward as he becomes part of the other festivities at the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Roger Yasukawa Hopes To Enjoy His Comeback At The 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona

Roger Yasukawa

Roger Yasukawa last made an appearance on the Daytona tracks while competing in the Rolex 24 At Daytona race in 2007. For the 2010 season Roger Yasukawa aspires to enjoy his stint on the Daytona International Speedway tracks. Though the Los Angeles native finished sixth overall at the 2007 season of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, he did have regrets of not being able to fully enjoy the event. This year he aspires to make the most of his past experience on the tracks along with his teammates. Roger Yasukawa will get to share driving duties with Gene Sigal who is a former Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series regular and won the Grand Prix of Miami in 2008. Accompanying them would be Californians Fred Poordad and Rusty West.

Roger Yasukawa stated that this would be a different experience altogether for him as he has been used to racing in a different class of cars. The biggest challenge according to Roger Yasukawa would be to keep the car in its best shape until they make it to the checkered flag. The Rolex 24 At Daytona is one of the finest sports car competitions in the world as it not only tests drivers on their racing abilities and speed but also tests their power of endurance to the hilt. The Daytona tracks have witnessed the finest of race car drivers competing for the best and consistent lap times in the 24 hours of racing. The drivers not only need to learn a lesson in speed but also need to learn how to survive for a period of 24 hours and be consistent with their performance.

Rolex 24 At Daytona

Roger Yasukawa also stated that he was not used to heavy cars like the No. 08 Sigalsport Ferrari 430 that he would be racing in this year. He went on to mention that he would have to adjust his driving style according to the car and also stated that the practice session should be enough to get him well accustomed to the chassis. He is hoping that his teaching and coaching experience would come in handy for the 24 hours endurance race. Roger Yasukawa is no stranger when it comes to racing’s heavyweight events; the Los Angeles native has competed five times already in the Indianapolis 500 and has successfully scored a pair of top-10 finishes. Roger Yasukawa also has extensive experience of racing in the IndyCar Series since 2003, wherein he competed in a total of 39 races for five teams and successfully scored nine top-10 finishes.

Roger Yasukawa mentioned that the Rolex 24 At Daytona was a great way to begin the racing season as he would get the opportunity to go up against racing talents like Scott Dixon, Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti. The IndyCar racer is also looking forward to reunite with some of his friends in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series paddock which include Buddy Rice, Michael Valiante and Jon Fogarty amongst others. Roger Yasukawa has come a long way as he has worked up the ladder from open wheels to Indy cars. He has also competed in the Formula Vauxhall, Barber Dodge, Formula Palmer Audi, Barber Pro and the Formula Atlantics. He is now looking forward to adjust his racing skills according to the Sigalsport Ferrari.
