grand-am-rolex-24-at-daytona1Deb Wills, a woman from Urbana who raised a hefty amount of $49,000 for breast cancer relief has been rewarded by the organizers of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Deb Wills raised the amount as part of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. She, along with other top ten fund raisers from across the nation, who were a part of the 2009 Avon Walk, were congratulated by Actor Patrick Dempsey and were also treated to a breakfast meal with the actor and his racing team- Dempsey Racing Champions’ Circle. The association between Avon and Dempsey Racing Champion’s Circle was announced a year ago during the 2009 Grand- Am Rolex Sports Car Series.

Deb Wills herself had suffered the pain of breast cancer. The lady herself had been a survivor of the deadly disease for the past 24 years and therefore left no stone unturned when it came to making a difference to other’s lives that had been fighting against the disease.  While talking about her quest to bring about a change, Deb Wills stated that she walked just because she couldn’t walk away. She further stated that she felt like her survival was a gift and it would further encourage women to witness a survivor walk. She added that she felt extremely blessed to be able to do participate in the event.

Apparently, Patrick Dempsey also participated in the 2009 Avon Walks for Breast Cancer in Patrick DempseyLos Angeles. The actor-racer won a racing suit which he was seen wearing during the 2009 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. While talking about the importance of the awareness for the cause, Patrick Dempsey stated that the fight against the disease had to be kept up as there was a latest diagnosis for it every 180 seconds. And this was the major reason why the funds raised by the nine Avon Walk fundraisers as well as the rest of the thousands of walkers across the country were so important. When asked about the pink racing suit with the Avon logo that he won and wore to the 2009 Grand-Am event, he stated with a smile that real men could wear pink.

The top ten participating walkers successfully collected $225,000 for the cause in the 2009 event. For Deb Wills, this year marked the 10th time that she participated in the Avon event. The lady has already begun preparing for the next Avon walk which is scheduled to take place in Washington sometime in May for which she has now set up a target of about $60,000. So far, Deb Wills has been able to collect an amount of $57,000 which was earlier collected by a team called Team All Years that consisted of 42 members. In all, the 2009 Avon Walks remained successful in raising an amount of above $52 million.

The money raised in the event will be utilized by the Avon Group in the field of breast cancer research, community organizations as well as setting up help centers for cancer related queries and information. The main aim would be to provide breast cancer diagnosis without being concerned with the fact that whether the person can pay or not. Deb Wills considers her association with the Dempsey Racing Champions’ Circle an added incentive.

The Rolex Grand-Am Series Decides To Stand Alone

Patrick Dempsey

The magic that the Rolex Grand-Am Series together with its open wheel cousin IndyCar created at Homestead last year will not be replicated this year. The officials of the Grand-Am series have decided not to share the spotlight and the screen space with the IndyCar. The step has come as a result of the last year’s official viewership figures of the series. According to the data, the viewership of the main races of the grand event was a lot more than what was received by the IndyCar events telecasted by the cable live from the Homestead-Miami speedway.

However, the live audience reactions that the IndyCar registered last year during the top end races of the Grand-Am for the Grand Prix of Miami, told a different story. Apparently, the open-wheel partner of the series got a good deal of attention from the media and the general public making it to about 30,000 people in the court last October.

Speaking about the new format of the series, David Spitzer, Vice President of the Grand Am series said that having IndyCar as an open wheel feels great, however the organizers had to take the decision keeping the sponsors and the team of the Grand Am series in mind so as to build a foundation for them.

Grand Am SeriesThis year the Rolex Grand-Am series will be seen flagging the race on its own preceded by the Continental Tire Classification Homestead 200. The event will take place in South Florida in front of comparatively closed group of audience. The Rolex Grand Am series has left no stone unturned for the good response from the crowd of South Florida. From restaurants and Bars to the local malls of South Florida, Grand-Am’s organizing team has flooded the city to attract the fan following of the series. The celebrated series- Rolex Grand Am Sports car series has also tied up with the famous television series Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey who will be seen competing in the race as well. The star will be seen racing in the Grand Prix’s Grand touring secondary division.

In addition, the organizing team of the series has also decided to offer a ticket worth $40 which will enable the fans to get a rare chance to meet the star Patrick Dempsey as well as his team mate Joe Foster. The star will also be taking forward the cause of Cancer, Hope and Healing through the event.  Patrick Dempsey will be seen becoming a part of the race which will last for about two hours and 45 minutes.

The star who will be seen driving in the Mazda looked elated at the development and said that he was excited about the fact that he was supporting the wonderful league of drivers to build a better series.
The Grand Prix of Miami will see basically two types of cars participating in the event, one being the Daytona Prototype and other being the GT Series. This year’s Rolex Grand Am Sports Car Series will see the drivers racing on the track which is about 2.23 mile long with more than 14 challenging turns.

Dempsey Racing Ends Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series On A High

Dempsey Racing

Dempsey Racing had a wonderful season at the 2009 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series as the team managed many highs on all the fronts of the challenging and one of the highly competitive tournaments of the world of motorsports. The team which boasts of race drivers Patrick Dempsey and Joe Foster and was ably supported by their hugely impressive stand-in driver Charles Espenlaub had series of career-best performances not only for the team as a whole but for the individual drivers as well. With the kind of run they ensured for Mazda it made the GT class of Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series even more competitive and Mazda an even bigger force in the circuit. The way the No 40 Dempsey Racing Mazda RX- 8 GT performed in the 2009 season the upcoming 2010 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series season can be expected to be more challenging and going by the high hopes that the Dempsey Racing has justifiably built up, the team is likely to ensure some upsets and improve on the successful outing they had this year.

Dempsey Racing has been around for a while with the team having made its debut in the 2007 season of the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series at the Miller Motorsports Park. Like most of the teams the team has taken its time to come to the grove in the most competitive and challenging of tournaments in the world of motorsports. It goes to the credit of the Dempsey Racing team, its strategists, team crew and mechanics and of course the drivers that in a span of couple of seasons the team has managed to come up with really outstanding results in the just concluded 2009 season. The outcomes of the efforts of the team can be judged from the fact that the No 40 Dempsey Racing Mazda RX- 8 GT was placed

Patrick Dempsey

among the top-10 in as much as seven of the twelve races which constituted the 2009 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series. And this was not as in addition to the impressive showing and accompanying results for the team, the drivers had their highpoints too, making the season gone by the best everyone in the team had had so far.

Patrick Dempsey who is the lead driver and after whose name the team is named was driving in his fifth year as a driver and had his best outing so far. He was impressed with the overall and his own performance in the 2009 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series season and is very optimistic about ensuring better results next year. The highlight of the year for Patrick Dempsey was the grand finale of the season at the Grand Prix of Miami where the Dempsey Racing managed to finish at the sixth place, its best result of the season. For his co-driver Joe Foster this season was his best too as he enjoyed his stint as the anchor driver for team for all of the twelve races. He managed great qualifying results as well as finishes to justify his role as the team’s anchor driver. Now it would be really interesting to see whether the Dempsey Racing team can improve on its performance in the 2010 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series season.

Patrick Dempsey Fields His Own Grand-Am Series Team In The Rolex 24

Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey is fielding his own Grand-Am series racing team this year in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Following in the footsteps of the late Paul Newman, Hollywood heartthrob Patrick Dempsey has become an actor turned sports car racer by acquiring the team formally known as Hyper Sport. The Grand-Am team will compete against the finest drivers in the world in the No. 16 under the Dempsey Racing banner.

Although Dempsey attempted to compete in the race last year, he had a frightening mishap exiting pit road during the trials. Dempsey is prepared, however, for the challenges this time around, as he explains: “”Last year, I didn’t really have an understanding. Certainly, getting out the pits was my first realization. Every time I go out, I’m much slower and careful.” In his second trip, Dempsey feels like he is making progress on the twist and turns of the 3.56-mile road course: “I’m really pleased with this morning and where I was last year and where I am this year,” Dempsey said. “I hope that continues on.”

Rolex 24 RaceIn the race, Dempsey has teamed up with the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer, and he will be promoting breast cancer awareness. The Dempsey Racing team will add a touch of pink to the Rolex 24 by adding a swathe of bright pink down the centre of the car as it competes in the GT class of the Grand-Am Rolex Series opener. When asked about the pink swathe in such a manly sport, Dempsey laughed:  “Real men can wear pink. All of us at Dempsey Racing are proud to partner with the Avon Foundation in its fight against breast cancer. I am so proud to support the cause, which raises funds that directly save lives,” Dempsey continued, “While two very different types of endurance events, the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and sports car racing have the common tie of the mental and physical stamina required to achieve success.

With that juxtaposition in mind, a special contest for top fundraisers of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer will be unveiled during the Rolex 24.” Like Rolex, the sponsor of the 24-hour racing event, Patrick Dempsey has showed himself to be nothing less than a class act. By carrying on the tradition of Paul Newman, Patrick Dempsey manages to connect the Grand-Am Rolex Series with philanthropy, doing his best to help others as he pursues his car racing dreams.
