Spain Take 2-0 Lead In Rolex Sponsored Davis Cup 2009 Final

Rafael Nadal

With impressive performances in the first singles the defending champion Spain looks well on its way to successful defense of the most coveted event in the world of tennis, Davis Cup. Rolex which has been the official time keeper of the popular Davis Cup continues with this relationship with another successful year. Rolex has the philosophy of promoting human brilliance through its various efforts including sponsoring different sporting events and its close involvement with the world of tennis through a long association with Davis Cup is an example of the same. Davis Cup holds a higher place in every tennis player and fan’s heart and there is always an extra effort that everyone puts into the game to come out victorious. The same feeling has been reverberating the Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona as the tennis stars of Spain and Czech Republic gathered for gaining the greatest glory in front of thousands of screaming fans.

The Davis Cup 2009 Final is witnessing some of the best players of not only the respective countries but also of the world facing each other in what can be equated to the most respected tournament in the tennis tour. Spain which looks like the stronger of the two teams has a lot to gain from winning the Davis Cup 2009 as it will try to become one of the very few nations who have the honor of having successfully defended the cup. Moreover, Spain has had a great decade in the Davis Cup and this win would be there fourth in the same period. And since the final is being played in the city of Barcelona, winning here would be more memorable for Spain considering they had captured their very first Davis Cup title in the same city in the year 2000.

Tomas Berdych

Living up to its reputation of being the better of the two finalists Spain has made a great start to their campaign with two straight wins in the first singles. The first match of the Rolex sponsored Davis Cup 2009 final was played between the two best players from both the nations with Rafael Nadal leading the charge for the hosts Spain and Tomas Berdych doing the honors for the visitors Czech Republic. Rafael Nadal in fact was coming from a not so impressive performance in his last few matches which saw him losing matches after matches but the way he played in the Davis Cup Final opener he was back to his real self and winning ways. He played like a champion and completely outplayed his rival with the final score reading 7-5, 6-0, 6-2. It was what was expected from a player of the caliber of Rafael Nadal and before Tomas Berdych could find his feet Spain had drawn the first blood.

In the second match of the Davis Cup 2009 Final the match was extended to five sets as Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek completely routed the Spanish star David Ferrer in the first two sets. But he could not keep up the momentum as David fought back brilliantly into the game and took the match to the fifth set. After over four hours of volleying the match was won by David Ferrer with the score reading 1-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 8-6 and the overall score reading 2-0 in favor of Spain. Czech Republic still has a chance to come back and win the Rolex sponsored Davis Cup 2009 Final but it is going to be an uphill task from here on.
