Ro(c)kin In Style: Al Roker Ups The Style Quotient At The U S Open
At the U.S Open this year, Rolex was not only playing on the field but was keeping time off the field as well. The Rolex logo was splashed across the flags, the greens, the t-shirts, the clubs, the golf carts et al but most importantly it recurred with serial prominence on the wrists of players and spectators alike.
Rolex is the proud sponsor of the U.S Golf Championships and this time it lovingly wrapped itself around the wrist of NBC host Al Roker. Roker has been a constant face at the U S Open covering the news for NBC watchers in general and sports enthusiasts in particular. Roker was spotted wearing a premium stainless steel finish Rolex Submariner Date. Apparently Al Roker has been a watch aficionado for a long time but he has been the most devoted to his Submariner Date.
Al Roker is better known for his stint with NBC as their weather anchor for their show called Today. Roker was born in Queens New York and graduated from Xavier High School in Manhattan. The TV show regular got a double major in graphic design and broadcasting from the State University of New York but found his calling in weather forecasting with WNBC in New York City. He also served as weather anchor for CBS associate WTVH in Syracuse from 1974-1976, teaming it up with WTTG from 1976-78 and for the NBC affiliate WKYC-TV till 1983. He beat the rooster at weather predictions when he worked as weather anchor for WNBC in New York City from 1983 onwards.
The Al Roker Show debuted in 1995 as a weekend talk show on CNBC. Roker also hosted a game show named Remember This? On MSNBC. David Letterman, famous for his antics on the Late Night with David Letterman once asked Roker to do a run from across the hall from the WNBC studio in the GE building. Whether Roker played along or not the tiring chore got him the job as forecaster with Weekend Today. He was on the job for a good nine years making weather forecast more than just talking about how sunny the day would be. When his co host Willard Scott retired from the show Roker was on board as the weekday weather forecaster on Today officially joining from January 26, 1996.
Al Roker has some great adventures to his credit. In 2005 when the Hurricane Wilma hit the US he reported from inside the hurricane. Roker was actually swept off his feet in the hurricane and a video footage shows him holding onto his cameraman while the hurricane wrecks havoc. Rocker has two programs on The Food Network to his credit called Roker on the Road and Tricked Out Tailgating. Roker also told the weather on the radio doing what he does best for many radio stations one of which was on the New York smooth jazz radio station WQCD and WNWV for a Cleveland based Jazz station. The service was named after him and was called “Al Roker Radio Weather Network”. The funny bone in his audience tickled when Roker referred to local broadcasters cutting into his segment as his audience getting news from their “neck of the woods”
The Rolex Submariner Date chronometer has a permeation capacity up to 300/1000 feet and also has a unidirectional bezel that is rotatable. The black dial is set off with a Oyster Fliplock and has a self winding movement. Its no wonder that it has such a huge fan in Al Roker, he can wear it in bad weather and golfing events with equal ease.
