Anna Tunnicliffe Wins 2009 ISAF Rolex Sailor Of The Year Award

Anna Tunnicliffe has emerged as the undisputed top woman sailor for the year 2009. Being named the Rolex Sailor of the Year has added another feather to her cap. She won from among the list of nominees that included talented woman sailors like Sam Davies (GBR), Hilary Lister (GBR) and Blanca Manchón (ESP). The trophy was presented by HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark who is a regular on the Farr 40 circuit and Lionel Schurch of Rolex SA. In addition to the World Sailor Trophy which is a marble sphere crowned by five silver spinnakers representing the world and its continents Anna Tunnicliffe was also honored with a Rolex Yacht-Master timepiece.
Rolex has been a constant supporter of sailing events and has added to the prestige of the sport. Rolex competitions provide a world-class platform for sportspersons from around the world. Emerging a winner and earning the trophy is a top achievement for any sailor. Anna Tunnicliffe is no stranger to success as she has taken upon herself a variety of challenges across a wide range of boats and disciplines in the past twelve months. She was the winner of a gold medal for USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the Laser Radial competition. She was the first to bring home the US Women’s Olympic sailing medal in the past 20 years. She was recognized for her achievements during the qualifying period of September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009 at the ceremony held at the Busan Yacht Club in Haeundae-gu. Anna Tunnicliffe also won the Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship in Rochester, New York, USA in October. She was the runner-up at the Rolex Osprey Cup held in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA.

Anna Tunnicliffe stated at the awards ceremony that it is not always about winning for her but it is about learning and having fun while doing it. She took the number 1 position at the World Cup event in January 2009, the Rolex Miami OCR and the Women’s Laser Radial North American Championship in February. She won the silver medal at the Laser Midwinters East in February and won the bronze at the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Finale in Porte Alegre, Brazil in March as well as took home the top position in the NYYC Women’s Match Racing Regatta. Her next aim is to win the gold in Match Racing at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
Anna Tunnicliffe has kept herself busy all year round by competing in Match racing as well as Laser sailing. Both disciplines require different set of skills. While Laser sailing is all about team work and synchronizing efforts and collective decisions, Match racing is all about intense pressure and pitching one’s own tactics against one other boat instead of an entire fleet. Anna Tunnicliffe displayed immense ability and talent to switch effectively between both the disciplines. In September she took top position at the US Women’s Match Racing Championship and came second at the Snipe Women’s World Championship in Spain. She was unanimously named US Sailing’s Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year in 2008. Her spectacular wins and accumulation of gold medals gave her the undisputed lead in the overall standings and won her the honor.
