When Lil Wayne tore up Los Angeles on April 29, 2009, performing an awesome live show at the Gibson Amphitheatre, was the hip-hop superstar wearing a Rolex?
The question is essential because the top rapper in the world should be wearing nothing less than the top luxury watch. When the London Grime-founder DJ Wiley asks who is wearing his Rolex in the 2008 smash hit, he makes the implication that every performer of true substance should be wearing a Rolex watch on their wrist. In a recent interview, DJ Wiley was asked which celebrity out there he would allow to wear his Rolex. With a smile, DJ Wiley replied: “I don’t know. Let me think. Not still Halle Berry? But yeah, I would let her wear it for a day. . . As for Hip-hop, I like Lil Wayne because he’s not scared to say anything, to speak his mind.” The problem with Lil Wayne is that he has this strange habit of wearing big loud bling bling watches with no class or precision. In the multitude of publicity shots of the star, there is only a single photo where Lil Wayne is wearing a gold Rolex Day Date Presidential. Upon seeing the photograph, the reaction of any true fan is a bingo-like realization, a diamond bullet to the brain reminiscent of Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now: Here is an 18k gold Rolex wristwatch that matches the powerful presence of a hip-hop superstar like Lil Wayne!
Lil Wayne broke into the big time with 2004’s Tha Carter and the two subsequent albums, Tha Carter II (2005) and Tha Carter III (2008). Tha Carter III led to a windstorm of critical praise, including eight Grammy Award nominations. Lil Wayne’s anticipated rock album, Rebirth, will feature cameos from some of the biggest names in the rock industry and is scheduled to be released in 2009. According to Rolling Stone, Lenny Kravitz, Avril Lavigne and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy will be appearing on the album. Lil Wayne’s choice to dabble in rock has been met with raised eyebrows, but the rapper is not letting outside opinions sway his diamond focus on being the very best that he can be. “Wayne knows some people aren’t gonna feel this,” Cortez Bryant, Lil Wayne’s manager, told Rolling Stone. “He don’t care.” Lil Wayne is not only a rapper and possible rock ‘n roll star, but he is also an educated man as well. Even with his tremendous success as a rap star, Lil Wayne is proud that he managed to find the time to go back to school. After earning his GED in 2004, Lil Wayne enrolled at the University of Houston in January 2005 with plans to major in political science. To earn his degree, he began taking online courses while touring the world. An article in Urb magazine in March 2007 asserted that Lil Wayne had been earning high grades at Houston. The subsequent flood of press and attention, however, led to Wayne discontinuing his education at the school. The hip-hop star has continued to take courses online. With tabloid reports of drugs arrests and a bad boy attitude, Lil Wayne has developed a wild reputation for living at the edge of the so-called civilized world. In truth, he is an accomplished performer and a canny executive who has created a blazing music career that deserves nothing but the best. Without question, Little Wayne should be wearing a Rolex watch to signify his performance and power. In addition, it is not surprising that Little Wayne made the perfect choice in the past: The 18k gold Rolex Day Date Presidential is the luxury wristwatch for a truly successful man on the move.
