Rolex 24 At Daytona

SpeedSource lived up to its motto of ‘Never Give Up’ when it bagged the GT Class at the Rolex 24 At Daytona 2010. The team included Nick Ham, Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell and Jonathan Bomarito, together they raced in the No.70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8. Racers teamed up to give the team its second Rolex 24 victory in three years. It also turned out to be the 23rd class victory for Mazda in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Sylvain Trembley owed the success of the team to the dealers of North America and Mexico as well as to all the members of the Mazda Speed Motorsports and club racers. SpeedSource began with a third but eventually lost its pace during the third and the fourth hours. This loss continued when the car began to vibrate. As the race hit fourteenth hour, the team had registered a sixth place but still was seven laps away from the leading car. In spite of all the hurdles, Mazda RX-8 had got onto lead the race, reiterating its motto- ‘Never Give Up’. Due to a trail of misfortunes of competitors together with SpeedSource’s own efforts, the team led by four laps over No. 67 ShoreTel/Openwave Porsche GT3.

The SpeedSource’s team members maintained their pace till the end, making the title of GT Class in Rolex 24 At Daytona fall into their kitty. Except for TRG or Stevenson Motorsports, no other team could lead the race for about 16 long consecutive hours. Moreover, these teams remained in the top five positions most of the time during the race. But the race witnessed a twist in the final quarter when Andrew Davis, Stevenson Motorsports driver faced a transmission problem in the car while all the three drivers paced up to complete 217 laps. During the same time, Bobby Labonte, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion racing in the No. 71 TRG ran out of fuel while he was on the superstretch making it the last lead of the day for the No. 71.
No.70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8

A broken spring and a stuck throttle took a toll on No.67 Porche GT3, forcing them out. SpeedSource’s No.69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 also suffered a water leak in the car which made them settle for the 16th position in their Class. After all the lead racers had their way out, that left SpeedSource’s No.70 leading by four laps. However, on the bigger picture, all the four champs Nick Ham, Sylvain Tremblay, David Haskell and Jonathan Bomarito made it to the seventh position completing 145 laps overall. The checkered flag was crossed over by Jonathan Bomarito who expressed the whole experience as ‘Amazing’ and gave the credit of team’s success to all the team members. He felt elated and said that it was the confidence that every team member had in each other that played the trick. The No. 70’s success was followed up by Bergmeister’s team who finished at second position while the third position was taken up by TRG’s team racing in No. 66 AXA Porsche GT3. With a great start to the season the SpeedSource team is very positive about the upcoming season and is looking forward to the Grand Prix of Miami, the next race of the Grand-Am Rolex Series which has been scheduled to take place at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
