Rolex Accessories: Different Bezel Styles

Simple Bezel

The bezel is an important cosmetic feature of any Rolex watch. Yet in addition to rendering a touch of class to the watch, the bezel also makes the case more pressure-proof while facilitating the measurement of elapsed time and average speed in certain sport models. Rolex offers different style bezels for most of its models. There are two broad categories of bezels: simple bezels and jeweled bezels.

Simple Bezels

This category includes all bezel styles that are not fitted with precious or semi-precious stones. Some of the most popular bezel styles in this category include the following:

  • Polished bezel
  • Fluted bezel
  • Domed bezel
  • Engine-turned bezel
  • Finely-engine-turned bezel
  • Bezel printed with tachymeter (logarithmic) scale found in Rolex Cosmograph Daytona models
  • Bezel printed with 24-hour markings found in Rolex GMT-Master and Explorer II
  • Elapse time bezel found in Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller models
  • Turn-O-Graph bezel found in Turn-O-Graph Datejust models

Jeweled Bezels

Rolex offers a number of jeweled bezel options in many popular watch models. If you like jewelry and want to flaunt an exceptional-looking wristwatch, a bezel outfitted with precious or semi-precious stones is the perfect choice. However, such options are available for 18k gold and platinum models only. This means that if you are looking for a diamond bezel in stainless steel model watches, you may not be able to find one. In the preowned market, however, stainless steel Rolex watches with diamond bezels are readily available. Some of the unique diamond bezels offered by Rolex include the following:

Jeweled Bezel
  • Platinum bezel embedded with 40 full-cut diamonds in some ladies' Oyster Perpetual Datejust models

Bezel Style Identification Number

Rolex designs and produces many different Bezel styles, which are available upon request. Rolex has given an identification number for the Bezel type within the 5-digit or 6-digit Case Reference Number (also known as the Model Reference Number) that is engraved on every Rolex watch. For the watches produced from the mid 1980s to 2000, the Case Reference Number consists of 5 digits. On watches produced since 2000, the Case Reference Number consists of 6 digits. The Bezel type is indicated by the second to last digit in both 5-digit and 6-digit Model Reference Numbers. The table below lists the digits and the corresponding bezel styles indicated:
