Diamond Cut

Cut, one of the four C’s, is a deciding factor when grading the quality, worth, and rarity of a diamond. When a properly Cut Diamond has light directed at it, the Diamond will reflect the colors of the rainbow. As the quality of the Cut lessens, more light passes through the Diamond instead of reflecting, resulting in a less brilliant-appearing stone.

Several factors contribute to the overall ability of a Diamond to reflect light. When a Diamond is perfectly symmetrical and smooth, rainbow-colored light will reflect out of the top of a diamond, also known as the "table."

  • How deeply a Diamond is Cut will have a direct affect on a Diamond’s ability to reflect light.
  • Ideally, the full color spectrum is reflected from the Diamond.
  • If the Diamond is Cut too shallow, light will refract out of the bottom of the Diamond.
  • If the Diamond is Cut too deep, light will refract out of the side of the Diamond.

A diamond is graded on the quality of its Cut (including its symmetry and polish). Cut Grades are commonly graded as: Ideal, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

The Diamonds offered by Melrose Jewelers are Cut at the Very Good grade. Very Good Diamonds fall under the category of the top 15% of all Diamonds Cut. Very Good Diamonds reflect nearly as much light as Ideal Diamonds (the top 3% of Cut Diamonds) but at a far better value. Very Good Diamonds offer the customer the best possible Diamond at the most affordable price.
