Diamond Clarity

Also known as inclusions, blemishes, or birthmarks, imperfections impact a Diamond’s Clarity. Clarity, one of the four C’s, is based on a Diamond’s natural imperfections and generally has the smallest affect on a Diamond’s appearance. In fact, for High Clarity-Graded Diamonds, imperfections are only visible when looking at the Diamond using special lighting under 10x magnification.

Diamond Clarity typically refers to very small internal markings that do not materially affect the passage of light, as opposed to external imperfections — which can normally be polished out.

Clarity has a similar grading system to Color and Cut. Grades reflect the obvious blemishes and durability of the Diamond. It is important to note that, when set in jewelry, Diamond markings are much more difficult to spot.

  • F, IF Flawless, or Internally Flawless, Diamonds have no imperfections under 10x magnification. Diamonds at this grade are extremely rare and very expensive.
  • VVS1, VVS2 Very, Very Slight Inclusions, can only be spotted by an expert gemologist under 10x magnification.
  • VS1, VS2 Very Slight Inclusions, invisible to the naked eye.
  • SI1, SI2 Small Inclusions, visible under 10x magnification, but very difficult to spot with the naked eye and nearly impossible to notice when placed in jewelry.
  • I1, I2, I3 Included. These diamonds have imperfections that may be visible to the naked eye. These Diamonds are not offered by
