Diamond Certification
When you buy Diamond jewelry from Melrose Jewelers, your purchase will come accompanied with its own Diamond Certificate – an official, independent, objective report specifying the Diamond quality and characteristics. Every Diamond at Melrose Jewelers is examined by the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL). The EGL is among the most respected and often used independent Diamond grading organizations in the world. Other premier organizations include the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
The gemologists at the EGL characterize Diamonds in multiple categories – including the four C’s – using complex scientific instrumentation. The Diamond grading criteria covered in official Diamond reports from the EGL include:
Shape and Cut: What is the shape and cutting style? I.e. Round Brilliant
Color: How much color — or lack thereof — is present in the Diamond? Grades range from D to Z.
Clarity: Are there noticeable imperfections in the Diamond? A Plot Map is included, showing exactly where any markings are found. Grades range from F to I.
Weight: Carat weight of the Diamond, rounded to the nearest hundredth. I.e. 0.76 carat
Additional information in a Diamond Certification includes further Diamond measurements, encompassing: depth (in relation to diameter), table, crown, and pavilion percentages, girdle thickness, culet facet, and finish quality .
This information is very important, and not the same as an appraisal. Diamond Certification does not establish the price of a Diamond, but rather verifies the precise qualities and characteristics on which the value of the Diamond is based. An appraisal is based on the replacement value or market value of a Diamond with the qualities and characteristics specified in a Diamond Certificate.
